Mission Statement: To enhance the quality of life for older adults who are experiencing limitations and those who care for them.
History of Covenant Senior Day Program
Covenant Senior Day Program in Portage evolved from the desire of congregational leaders at St. Michael Lutheran Church, our Portage host site, to utilize space that was basically unused during the week. They wanted a project that would benefit the community and would involve the care of frail elders. They felt an adult day program could meet the need to help frail older adults remain at home and out of nursing home.
After two years of planning, establishing a Board of Directors. incorporating as a private non-profit, 501 (c) (3) organization, the Portage site at St. Michael Lutheran Church opened on October 6, 1996. Open Monday thru Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. we have grown from serving just a few participants to having an average daily attendance of 18+.
Recognizing a need for Adult Day programming on the east side of the county, in 2002 a second site was established in Richland at the Richland Area Community Center. This site replicates the activity focused care of the Portage site.
Covenant Senior Day Program serves Kalamazoo and contiguous counties and has earned a reputation for being a very caring place for the older adults we serve. Financial assistance is available to help qualifying families in paying for the cost of the day; transportation via the Covenant cars is available at both sites; personal care, showers, can be provided at both sites and the daily activity schedule is geared to the needs and interests of our participants.
